Xalapa, also spelled "Jalapa", is the capital of Veracruz state. It's located some 100 km inland from Vera Cruz on Highway 140 in the foothills on the way to Puebla. While not as high as Orizaba, its 1230 mts. (4000 ft) does lift sufficiently above the sometimes miasmastic lowlands to provide some climatic relief. Xalapa, home of the main campus of the University of Veracruz, is in the heart of coffee country. The main industries are government, education, and tourism, the latter enhanced by the presence of one of the finest museums of Anthropology in the world.
Xalapa is also the jump-off point for much of the whitewater rafting in Veracruz state as well as headquarters for many of the ecotourism businesses. Xalapa a picturesque city set in the coffee-growing country of the Mexican state of Veracruz, is a favorite with both Mexican and international visitors. From most parts of the city you can view the nearby snow capped Pico the Orizaba.

Xalapa’s attractions is the city’s cultural scene. Concerts and theatrical events were advertised widely throughout El Centro. The city’s symphony orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa, is considered by many to be Mexico’s finest. Also, the Universidad de Vera Cruz has a prominent music school where frequent free concerts are available. We were told, by the way, that tickets to the Symphony cost all of 20 pesos!
