Santa Rosalía is an isolated town located on the Sea of Cortés that possesses its own unique style of French architecture. On July 7, 1885, the French mining company "El Boleo" began to harvest the rich copper deposits of Santa Rosalía. Then President Porfirio Diaz offered a 99-year contract that provided for total tax exemption for 50 years and 44,742 acres of land. In exchange, the company was obliged to build a town, including a port and public buildings, generate employment for Mexican workers and establish a maritime route between Santa Rosalía and Guaymas. Santa Rosalia is known as the "La Ciudad De Madera" or the "Wooden City." This association began in 1885 when a French mining company, El Boleo, acquired a 99-year right to excavate deposits of copper. They also had the rights to over one million nearby acres. In exchange, to appease the Mexican government, El Boleo agreed to build a town, port, and public buildings here. Of course, they also had to create employment for the Mexican workers. The French company built wooden houses to create the town, as per an agreement with the Mexican government. The mining companies are now gone. Santa Rosalia supports itself with gypsum and manganese production, tourism and marine activities. The town dresses up from October 10 - 22 each year to celebrate its founding with sports and cultural events. One of the main attractions at the town is undoubtedly the metal church. Originally built entirely of stamped steel sheet squares, it is supported by a formidable steel structure in a sober and austere style. Despite this, it has been brutally modified in favor of functionallity (its former lateral corridors were turned into habitable space using crude masonry), and stripped from several of its original stained glasses, it still preserves some of the original 1800's spirit. Traditionally its design is credited to the renowned Architect Gustave Eiffel. For the tourist, Santa Rosalía offers comfortable lodging, fine restaurants, RV Parks, marina access, a domestic airport, bus depot and a ferry terminal with direct service to and from Guaymas, Sonora.
